About Us

At Woolly Thinking our aim is to provide our customers with high quality wools and yarns from sustainable sources and produced by companies with good environmental and ethical standards. We believe that in this day and age it is important to think about how the things we buy are made and who made them. We have tried to do some of the hard work for our customers by researching the companies who supply us so that when you buy from us you can be safe in the knowledge that our wools and knitting accessories are as ecologically and ethically sound as possible.

We have tried to do this in a number of ways:

  • As far as possible stocking yarns from sustainable sources thus reducing our use of petroleum-based materials.
  • Supporting small, independent producers and local suppliers and manufacturers, particularly those based in the UK
  • Sourcing organic wool and cotton in order to reduce the environmental impact of their production
  • Stocking wool from British sheep breeds and where possible rare breeds to ensure the survival of those breeds
  • Sourcing fair-trade yarns and accessories and supporting those working towards obtaining fair-trade certification
  • Ensuring as far as possible, that the people who produce the products we stock are paid a fair wage for their work
  • Refusing to stock products that we know are produced in an unsustainable and environmentally detrimental manner.

Of course, we don't just depend on my suppliers to do all the hard work! In store we reuse and recycle as much as we can and whenever possible buy recycled products and packaging. We have also switched our energy provider to Ecotricty.

Not all of our stock choices may be perfect – sustainability is a complex issue, and we have had to make compromises along the way, but we sincerely hope we have helped knitters with our 'woolly thinking' and made it easier for everyone to make informed choices about the yarns they buy. We are also really interested to hear your suggestions for other yarns and products we could sell and to receive feedback about those we already stock, so please let me have your thoughts.

We hope to see you soon.
